Horseback riding on the beach: A fairy tale in the city

It’s early on a Sunday morning. We feel the coolness of the sea while walking on a sandy beach. We see horses and riders and hear the sound of the waves. It looks like a scene from a fairy tale and yet it’s only a few kilometres from the center of Athens!

We were able to put aside the stress of everyday life. All we had to do is admire this magnificent landscape of the isolated beach in Vravrona, while sniffing the salt from the sea. All of this was possible while being on the back of a horse, riding in the calm waters.

The adventure started by meeting our animal friends and making the first acquaintance. We then started timidly taking our first steps in the water together. As time passed, we began to move away from the shore, until we reached so deep that the horses were almost completely submerged water. The most experienced and daring of us, rode freely on a large part of the beach, offering an impressive spectacle. The people from the riding club were watching closely and were giving instructions to help run things smoothly. You could tell that they were ready to intervene in case of emergency.

You could see and hear the joy, laughter and teasing going on all over the beach! There is an incredible feeling of freedom when riding a horse which is difficult to describe. That feeling evolves into joy when you start realising that your “partner” (the horse) seems to enjoy both your company and being in the water. Fortunately, we had a professional photographer capturing those unique moments.

The group of people who joined us this day was so diverse and this is exactly what is great about this particular event. No experience is required! Anyone, regardless of age or physical condition, can enjoy and have fun with these majestic animals. This is also a great experience for families! Even if you fall from the horse, you’ll only be cooling off in the sea!

Horse riding offers the unique opportunity for a rider to connect emotionally with his horse, since they are practically “working” together. It is well known that through this relationship, one can receive huge benefits, both mental and physical, such as mental tranquility and body training.

It is no coincidence that horses have proven to be great companions for humans for many years. After a whole day spent with them, these lovable animals have given us a fascinating experience, taking us back in time…

Tips

There is no need for special equipment or previous experience with horse riding. You only need your love for animals!

Wear comfortable and cool clothes to enjoy the ride to the fullest. It is recommended to use a hat as well as sunscreen.

Feel comfortable with the horses and get closer to them! Don’t forget that you and your horse will work as a team for a few hours.

Horse trainers will provide instructions and take care of everyone’s safety.

To keep the memory alive forever, a professional photographer will be present throughout the activity (2-3 hours).
